Innovation MBA Student
CURRENT IMBA STUDENT
For current Innovation MBA student Devon Correll, continuing her education with graduate study is an important step in ongoing career success. “I always knew I wanted to get my MBA, and knew that it is an extremely important qualification to have for many management and upper management positions,” she said. “It was not an option to go right into an on-campus MBA program full time immediately after completing my bachelor’s degree — I needed to be able to save money and support myself prior to starting a graduate program. I chose to start my MBA because I realized that I was at a point in my life where I was my only responsibility and was able to put that focus on myself and my education.”
Devon was recently promoted to regional manager of sales development at Oracle and leads a team of 13 sales representatives. Because of her busy work schedule and full personal life, Devon was looking for a program that didn’t require on-campus study: “I knew that if I was going to go back to school for my MBA, it needed to be a program that was flexible with my career and personal life. I was finding that many online programs required the students to be on campus for certain courses, which I knew was not going to be feasible for me, especially location-wise. When I found Jefferson’s iMBA program, it was a perfect fit for my career, and personal goals.”
Devon was excited to continue her studies at Jefferson Online because she had such a positive experience early in her undergraduate education. “I had started my undergraduate degree with Jefferson, and loved everything the school had to offer,” she said. “I transferred mid-sophomore year due to personal reasons and continued my bachelor’s at Bryant University, but Jefferson had always had a special place in my heart. Once I discovered that they offered an online MBA program, I knew that I wanted to look into it as a top interest for my graduate degree program. I was very impressed with Jefferson’s unique Innovation MBA program because it was something very unique to Jefferson. I didn’t see that type of creativity in any other online MBA program I was looking at and that appealed to me.”
Devon’s favorite course in the iMBA program so far is International Finance and Economics, which came as a surprise: “I can’t even believe I am saying this! I always struggled with both [finance and economics]. When I found out that the second course I had to register for in the iMBA program was International Finance and Economics, you can guess that I was absolutely dreading it! Professor Shay Richardson was phenomenal with the course direction and material provided. I actually found I understood each unit! Having had trouble with both subjects prior, I gave the course 200% and was determined to learn and understand everything I could with each unit every week. My hard work paid off, [since] I have found a new interest and appreciation for international economics.”
Devon describes one of her favorite instructors. “Professor Richardson crafted an amazing course that changed my perception of international economics where I now enjoy learning more about it,” she said. “Even though our course was all done virtually, I still felt Professor Richardson’s passion for the course subject and individual interest in each student.”
Looking ahead , Devon is excited to apply what she is learning in the iMBA program and further develop professionally as a manager: “As a current manager, this degree is going to make a significant impact in my career by bettering my skills and qualifications. My goal is to work in management, and eventually work my way up the ladder within my organization. Once completing my MBA, I will have the necessary skills and qualifications to be considered for those upper management positions.”
She says she would “absolutely” recommend Jefferson Online’s iMBA program to others because it allows students to balance work, family and education. “Jefferson’s iMBA program makes it possible for real-life individuals who work full time, have families, and other obligations going on in their lives, to obtain their MBA. I have nothing but incredible things to say about this program and would recommend it to anyone interested in their MBA who works full-time,” she said.
Devon offers this advice for those considering enrolling in the online iMBA program: “It’s easy to keep telling yourself it’s not a good time, or maybe next year. Once you actually do it, you will realize that this program has been designed to work with people who already have other things going on in their lives like careers, families, sports, etc. Just do it, you won’t regret it!”
